These drawings began with my 2012 exhibition in Los Angeles which explored our cultural obsession with sports, memorabilia, fame and authenticity. I drew some of the most iconic examples by hand. A mechanically reproduced object became a unique work through the slow act of drawing.
More than a decade later it felt inevitable to complete the gesture by submitting the drawings to PSA. The same institution responsible for authenticating the objects that inspired them became part of the work itself. The drawing exists as both artwork and memorabilia. The slab was designed to protect and certify a collectible but here it becomes part drawing and part sculpture.
Today grading and provenance often carry as much weight as the objects themselves. The PSA holder is no longer just packaging. It has become part of the mythology. These works blur the line between drawing, memorabilia and conceptual sculpture while examining how contemporary culture constructs meaning, rarity and desire. Considering not only what we value but why we value it in the first place.
